Speaking with Invisible Friends by Karen Little

According to the Bible, in the beginning “there was the word.” But why a word?

It’s through words and expression that we identify things, coordinate with others, and ultimately get things done.

Speaking to other humans is vital—especially those we hold dear. But speaking to invisible friends may be even more important, particularly for building self-awareness.

Anyone who’s ever prayed knows the power of streaming full thoughts to an unseen presence. That kind of invisible conversation can feel as meaningful as a sit-down with a beloved sister.

But invisible friends don’t have to be spiritual. Any object that captures your interest—a pet, a tree, a stuffed animal, even a piece of art—can become a trusted companion.
Just the act of putting thoughts into words helps you organize, clarify, and sometimes even make life-changing decisions, which is different from letting random thoughts drift through your mind. When you intentionally construct dialogue, you build a private world where no topic is off-limits and no one will reject you for speaking freely.
